Physical rehabilitation is an effective way to decrease pain and restore function in animals with a variety of health concerns.
Prior to your first visit, you’ll receive a history questionnaire so that the rehabilitation team can understand your pet’s health history, lifestyle, and your expectations.
When your pet first visits Veterinary Rehabilitation Hospital, they will undergo a thorough physical examination by your rehabilitation veterinarian including a gait evaluation, musculoskeletal exam, and neurologic exam. With the information gathered from these evaluations, your veterinarian will design a specific treatment plan and exercise program that best meets your pet’s needs.
Conditions We Treat With Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation can help many pets recover from surgery, regain lost muscle mass, improve neurologic function, address loss mobility, and decrease pain. Some examples of conditions treated are:
- Recovering from orthopedic surgery – tibial plateau leveling osteotomy, tibial tuberosity advancement, extracapsular suture cruciate repair, femoral head ostectomy, medial patellar luxation repair, fragmented medial coronoid process, osteochondritis dissecans, fracture repair, amputation, etc
- Musculoskeletal injury – medial shoulder instability, iliopsoas strain, collateral ligament strain, biceps tendinosis, supraspinatus tendinosis, other tendon or ligament injuries
- Non-surgical neurologic disease – chronic intervertebral disk disease, fibrocartilaginous embolism, degenerative myelopathy, lumbosacral disease, peripheral nerve injuries, neuromuscular disorders, vestibular disease
- Recovering from neurologic surgery
- Osteoarthritis of one or multiple joints
- Overweight or obese pets
- Hip or Elbow Dysplasia
- Muscular trigger points and other muscular injuries
- Senior pets to address pain and functional deficits at home
- Canine athletes to allow them to perform at their full potential
While rehabilitation alone can restore mobility and quality of life for many pets, some of these conditions may require surgical treatment in conjunction with rehabilitation.
